At this year’s Nairobi International Trade Fair, the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) showcased groundbreaking innovations aligned with the theme of climate-smart agriculture. With a focus on sustainability and food security, JKUAT’s exhibits captivated attendees and highlighted its vital role in driving Kenya’s development agenda.
JKUAT’s exhibits, spanning technology, agriculture, and engineering, emphasized sustainable solutions and modern agricultural practices, reinforcing the institution’s pivotal role in driving Kenya’s development agenda. They featured cutting-edge research and technological advancements aimed at enhancing food security and sustainability.
The university excelled in two categories: winning awards for the stand that best interprets the current show theme and for best innovation and invention stand. Additionally, it secured second place in categories for best stand in research and development education, most striking display (for locally manufactured products), and best university stand.
This recognition came at a time when the show’s theme emphasized climate-smart agriculture and trade initiatives, aligning seamlessly with JKUAT’s mission to foster agricultural innovation through science and technology.
During the Nairobi Agricultural show, the Deputy President, Rigathi Gachagua lauded the importance of institutions of higher education in driving research and solution-based initiatives that are crucial in providing key support to the Agricultural sector.
“Innovative efforts are crucial for supporting the sustainability of our agriculture and are vital for our nation’s future. By harnessing technology and research, we can empower our farmers and enhance food security across Kenya,” the Deputy President stated.
While touring the JKUAT stands, Chairman of the Council Dr. Micah Onsando underscored the importance of collaboration between academia and industry. He noted that the university’s innovative technologies, particularly in agriculture and engineering, have the potential to significantly impact Kenya’s economy.
“By leveraging our research, we can create solutions that empower local communities and enhance productivity. JKUAT’s participation at the Nairobi Show reflects our dedication to academic excellence and community engagement,” said Dr. Onsando.
Deputy Vice Chancellor (DVC) in charge of Research Production and Extension (RPE) Prof. Jackson Kwanza highlighted how JKUAT’s contributions enriched the show’s experience for all attendees. He noted that the university’s commitment to sustainability and technological advancement aligns perfectly with the event’s goals of showcasing progress and fostering development.
“The precision farming system presented is particularly noteworthy. It’s not just a technological marvel but also a practical tool that can greatly benefit our agricultural sector by increasing efficiency and reducing environmental impact,” Prof. Kwanza said.
