Kenya’s leading foreign exchange earner the horticultural sector, has shown significant growth with various farms expanding their territories and others acquiring new business ventures. In essence the sector is projected to grow at a minimum rate of 15% this year egged on by the expected opening up of the new high value market.
These projections have been boosted by plans to expand 200 hectares for the cultivation of flowers outside the traditional growing areas.
For instance, various farms among them P.J Dave has expanded its territory to Kuresoi region, Harvest Flowers Kenya has also expanded in Naivasha while AAA Kenya has sought to expand in Rumuruti area of Mt. Kenya region and Zena Flowers in Plateau.
On the other hand Preesman formerly a Dutch Breeder was recently acquired by Zena Roses from Kenya. The full takeover of all core business activities on breeding in rose, chrysanthemum, alstroemeria and gerbera, including all plant breeding rights.
Preesman Holland BV is the name of the new company, with a new license holder in Europe; Preesman Plants BV.
Subati Flowers Limited dream of hactereage increment is almost realized after acquiring land where Olij Rozen Kenya Ltd stands. In the same year, Xpression Flora acquired Sarkish and Florensis Hamer acquired Silze and May Flowers. Going by the industry romours, we have seen nothing yet; the sector is on an upward trend.
According to unconfirmed sources total hactereage could be edging to 3000ha. This can also be supported by the slight increment in Export figures.
