Can you share a bit about your role at Kreative Roses Christian:
Absolutely. As the Regional Liaison Cultivar Manager at Kreative Roses, my role primarily revolves around testing and introducing rose varieties to growers that are best suited to the unique microclimates and target markets. There’s a certain joy in collaborating with them, understanding their needs, and then witnessing the successful cultivation of roses that thrive in their specific environments.
Discuss evolution of rose growing in Kenya and the role played by Kordes Roses in this transformation?
Christian: In the 1980s and 90s, Kenya emerged as a new frontier for rose cultivation, presenting an opportunity for rapid expansion due to favorable climate conditions, competitive production costs, and the ability to supply year-round. Kordes Roses seized this opportunity, establishing itself as a leader with its diverse assortment of rose varieties. Kordes Roses East Africa was registered as a satellite company in Kenya in 1999.
A significant milestone came in 2006 when Kordes Rosen took a bold step by establishing its farm, Kreative Roses, in Kenya. This development not only accelerated the growth of the flower industry in Kenya, East Africa, and Sub-Saharan Africa but also had a ripple effect on the Europea, influencing growers and changing the dynamics of the market.
Could you provide some insights into the process of selecting and developing rose varieties, particularly in the diverse microclimates of Africa?
Christian: Certainly. The first selection of all our cut roses takes place in the greenhouse, with very low energy input, in W. Kordes’ Sцhne, our German HQ in Sparrieshoop. After about two years of breeding and rigorous selection, the chosen varieties are then sent to various growing regions, including the highlands of East Africa. Here, they undergo further testing under the regional climate conditions to ensure their suitability and adaptability. This meticulous process ensures that each rose variety is matched with its ideal environmental conditions, resulting in optimal growth and bloom characteristics. Additionally, ongoing collaboration with growers and continuous feedback mechanisms further contribute to the refinement and enhancement of Kordes’ rose varieties.
Based in the highlands around the equator in East Africa, with altitudes ranging from 1,600 to 3,400 meters above sea level, provide an ideal environment for rose cultivation. The temperate climate, ample sunlight, and optimal growing conditions allow roses to develop vibrant colors and desirable characteristics, making them highly sought after in the global market. This region has become a cornerstone of rose production, contributing significantly to the supply of premium roses to consumers worldwide.
