Richard McGonnell: Why You Shouldn’t Miss the Naivasha Horticultural Fair 2025

Richard McGonnell, Chairman of the Naivasha Horticultural Fair (NH Fair)

For more than two decades, the Naivasha Horticultural Fair (NH Fair) has been the heartbeat of Kenya’s horticultural industry.

It’s more than just a trade exhibition, it’s a celebration of innovation, resilience, and community spirit.

As the 2025 edition approaches, we sat down with Richard McGonnell, Chairman of the Fair, to talk about the state of the industry, the highlights of this year’s event, and why the NH Fair remains Africa’s premier horticultural showcase.

Richard:The industry has changed tremendously in the last 20 years. Today, Kenyan growers are competing on a global stage. But the challenges are real; climate change has introduced new pests like the False Codling Moth (FCM), market regulations are stricter, and we face heavy county and national compliance costs.

On top of that, land prices have skyrocketed, making it hard for new investors to break in. I honestly think the government should consider leasing land to investors just like Ethiopia does, otherwise, foreign investment will dry up.

Electricity and transport costs (road and air freight) remain painfully high, and while salaries keep rising, the business environment itself hasn’t improved. Many farms are struggling under these pressures.

Richard: Not anymore. We’re seeing smaller-scale growers enter the scene, particularly with summer flowers. Some are subcontracted by big farms, while others benefit from consolidation. It’s encouraging because it means the industry is becoming more inclusive and dynamic.

Richard: The Fair started 23 years ago with just 30–40 stands. Today, it’s Africa’s largest horticultural trade fair, drawing participants from across the continent, as well as Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and America.

This year marks our 23rd edition. We expect about 250 exhibitors and nearly 12,000 visitors, making it the biggest horticultural fair in Africa. Exhibitors range from floriculture and general agriculture to vehicle manufacturers, financial institutions, and service providers.

The 2025 edition is proudly presented by our title sponsor, the Co-operative Bank of Kenya, alongside major partners like Elgon Kenya, Amiran Kenya, Agrichem Africa, Greenlife Africa, Osho Chemicals, and the Naivasha Sports Club.

But what makes the NH Fair unique is not just business but charity. Every shilling of profit supports local causes: from a safe house for abused children, to community health centres, schools, water projects, and even a Children’s Protection Unit. Last year, we helped provide clean water to 20,000 people and expanded classrooms at Nyamathi Secondary School. That’s the legacy we’re building.

Richard: For exhibitors, it’s exposure at the largest business expo in Kenya. They get to showcase products, connect with potential clients, and tap into valuable market insights.

For visitors, it’s an incredible networking hub. You’re meeting everyone from start-ups to corporates, learning from experts, and discovering the latest technologies. It’s also a chance to find partners, explore investment opportunities, and see how support organizations can help businesses thrive.

Richard: Start by coming to the NH Fair. You’ll meet the experts face-to-face. But beyond that, do your homework thoroughly. Hire a consultant if you can, because this industry is complex. A solid, sustainable plan is critical before you put a single seed in the ground.

Richard: We’ve had amazing feedback. Here are a few that stuck with me:

  • “It is the best trade fair in Africa where companies showcase their products.” – Sally J.
  • “A great chance for agriculture experts to educate the public, students to gain priceless skills, and citizens to discover ways of utilizing land for investment.” – Ngure G.
  • “We appreciate the charitable work you do. Every year you get better; feeding, clothing, and sheltering the needy. Congratulations and best wishes for continued success.” – Jimmy N.

Those voices remind us why we do this, it’s not just about flowers, but about people.

Richard: Because it’s more than a fair, it’s a movement. It’s where innovation meets opportunity, where business meets community, and where Kenya showcases its best to the world. If you’re in horticulture or even just curious about it, there’s no better place to be.

The Naivasha Horticultural Fair 2025 takes place in Naivasha this September from 19th-20th. Don’t miss Africa’s biggest celebration of horticulture, business, and community impact.
