MPS-Compact Certification: A Game Changer for Small-Scale Growers

The demand for transparency and responsible practices in ornamental horticulture is on the rise. However, many small-scale growers have struggled with certification due to high costs and complex administrative requirements.

The new MPS-Compact certification provides an accessible solution, enabling growers with an annual turnover of up to €250,000 (approximately $271,000 USD) to meet the industry’s sustainability certification standards with ease.

What Is MPS-Compact?

MPS-Compact is designed to streamline the certification process while ensuring compliance with Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI) standards. The program requires growers to maintain environmental records on crop protection, fertilizers, energy, water use, and waste management, along with adherence to fundamental Good Agricultural Practices (GAP).

To obtain certification, growers log data over a six-month period. Once this record-keeping phase is complete, they can schedule an audit. Upon successful assessment, they receive MPS-Compact certification. Unlike other certification programs that require frequent audits, MPS-Compact mandates follow-up audits only once every three years, helping to reduce costs and administrative workload.

Additionally, MPS-Compact serves as a stepping stone for growers who wish to pursue more advanced certifications such as MPS-ABC, MPS-GAP, and MPS-SQ. Since previously recorded data remains accessible, transitioning to these higher-tier certifications becomes much more efficient.

For small-scale growers, MPS-Compact offers a practical way to showcase their commitment to sustainability. By obtaining this certification, they can maintain access to key markets and meet the growing sustainability expectations of buyers, retailers, and consumers.
