Kenya’s Leading Horticultural Export Markets Hold Firm

March 5, 2026

Kenya’s horticulture sector continues to anchor the national economy, generating vital foreign exchange earnings and sustaining thousands of growers, workers, and value-chain actors.

Between July and September 2025, total horticultural exports reached Sh31.3 billion, underscoring the sector’s resilience and sustained global demand for Kenyan produce.

The Netherlands retained its position as Kenya’s top market, absorbing exports valued at Sh10.998 billion. As Europe’s principal flower trading hub, the Dutch market remains especially critical for Kenya’s floriculture industry, serving both as a direct consumer and as a gateway to the wider European Union.

The United Kingdom followed with imports worth Sh4.469 billion, reflecting continued strong demand for Kenyan flowers and fresh produce. In the Middle East, the United Arab Emirates accounted for Sh2.524 billion, reaffirming its strategic importance as both a consumer market and re-export hub. France imported produce valued at Sh2.462 billion, maintaining its place among Kenya’s key European destinations.

Other notable markets included Germany, Spain, Saudi Arabia, and Kazakhstan, all of which continue to absorb significant volumes of Kenyan horticultural exports.

For the floriculture industry in particular, these figures highlight the country’s sustained competitiveness in premium flower markets. Roses and other cut flowers remain central to export earnings, supported by efficient cold-chain logistics, compliance with stringent phytosanitary standards, and well-established supply chains.

Kenya’s favorable agro-climatic conditions, skilled workforce, and ongoing government and private-sector investments continue to drive export growth. However, maintaining this trajectory will depend on safeguarding market access, upholding quality standards, and strengthening logistical infrastructure to meet evolving global requirements.

As international demand for fresh, high-quality flowers and produce grows, Kenya’s horticulture sector remains firmly positioned as a reliable supplier to the world’s leading markets.
