Kenyan avocado production is set to rise slightly this season, according to Praveen Kumar, CEO of Fruiu Limited. He notes, “Our output will be higher than last year, thanks to favorable weather conditions that have boosted production in Kenya.”
Despite the expected increase in production, there is currently a significant avocado shortage relative to demand. Kumar explains, “This year, demand has outstripped supply, leading to a shortage, partly due to increased orders from avocado oil producers and a rise in shipments to the EU by larger companies. The quality of the new crop is improving, and we anticipate better supply in a few weeks.”
Kumar is optimistic about entering new markets, especially in Europe, while acknowledging challenges in India. “We are currently exporting to the Middle East and looking for reliable European importers. India is a growing market, with volumes expected to increase 2.5 times by 2025, but the 33% import duty makes Kenyan avocados less competitive compared to duty-free Tanzanian avocados. Reducing this duty could help level the playing field for us.”
He also highlights the higher cost of export-grade packaging in Kenya and the search for sustainable, cost-effective options to enhance competitiveness. Overall, Kumar concludes that while this season is challenging, the new crop should improve supply for all exporters.
