Kenya’s Agriculture and Food Authority (AFA) has announced a seasonal suspension on harvesting and trading domestically grown macadamia nuts set to take effect from December 1, 2025, through to February 15, 2026. This proactive measure is designed to ensure the crop reaches full maturity, thereby safeguarding the high standards Kenyan macadamias are recognized for in both local and international markets.

The decision comes after a detailed phenological survey conducted in major macadamia-growing regions of Kenya revealed that a significant portion of the current crop is yet to fully mature. The AFA, acting under the mandate of the Crops Act 2013, through its Nuts and Oils Directorate, has been diligently overseeing the crop’s development to optimize quality factors including kernel size, oil content, and shelf life.

This temporary halt reflects the authority’s strategic approach to maintain Kenya’s competitive edge by preventing premature harvesting, which can compromise nut quality. The suspension covers all players involved in the macadamia value chain, including farmers, processors, exporters, importers, and marketing agents. Additionally, the ban on exporting raw, in-shell macadamia nuts remains in force to protect local industry interests.

Dr. Bruno Linyiru, the Director General of AFA, emphasized the authority’s commitment to the macadamia industry, affirming continued monitoring of maturity trends and readiness to adjust the closure period if necessary. This move aligns with broader efforts to position Kenyan macadamia nuts as a premium product globally.

Stakeholders have been urged to comply fully with the seasonal ban and can seek further guidance directly from the AFA. The authority continues to engage with the sector to uphold standards and support the sustainable growth of macadamia farming in the country.
