KAA Achieves Level 3 Carbon Accreditation for Four Airports

The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has reached a significant environmental milestone by achieving Level 3 certification from the Airport Carbon Accreditation (ACA) programme for four major airports.

This recognition highlights KAA’s ongoing commitment to reducing its carbon footprint in the aviation sector. The certification was awarded to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), Moi International Airport (MIA), Eldoret International Airport (EIA), and Kisumu International Airport (KIA). These airports now rank among the elite in East and Central Africa for their efforts in sustainable carbon management.

In a statement, KAA noted that the Level 3 certification demonstrates its dedication to environmental stewardship and aligns with its strategic goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2030, with a longer-term vision of reaching Net-Zero emissions by 2050.

KAA Managing Director and CEO Henry Ogoye emphasized the importance of the achievement, calling it a testament to the organization’s efforts to embed sustainable practices across its operations.

The ACA programme provides a structured approach to managing airport carbon emissions. Its 7-level accreditation model includes:

  • Level 1 (Mapping): Identifying emission sources.
  • Level 2 (Reduction): Implementing strategies to lower carbon emissions.
  • Level 3 (Optimisation): Engaging third parties to further reduce the airport’s carbon footprint.
  • Level 3+ (Neutrality): Offsetting remaining emissions to maintain carbon neutrality.
  • Level 4 (Transformation): Achieving deeper reductions through operational changes.
  • Level 4+ (Transition): Compensating for remaining emissions while transforming operations.
  • Level 5 (Net Zero): Aligning with the broader Net Zero commitments of the aviation sector.

KAA first entered the ACA programme at Level 1 in 2021, advanced to Level 2 in 2023, and has since implemented key initiatives to qualify for Level 3.

Green Initiatives Driving Success

The authority has introduced various eco-friendly initiatives at JKIA and other airports to support its sustainability goals. These efforts include:

  • Developing energy-efficient infrastructure.
  • Adopting renewable energy sources.
  • Implementing robust waste reduction programs.

These initiatives underscore KAA’s commitment to environmental responsibility and reducing its carbon footprint.

The ACA is the only globally recognized carbon management certification for airports, independently assessing and acknowledging airports’ efforts to manage and reduce carbon emissions. KAA’s certification places it at the forefront of sustainable aviation in the region, setting an example for others to follow.

As KAA continues its journey toward carbon neutrality, its efforts serve as a model for sustainable airport operations, showcasing how the aviation sector can contribute to global climate goals.
