IPM ESSEN 2026 closed with a clear message: despite economic pressure, uncertain markets and rising production demands, the global horticulture industry is investing in its future. From 27 to 30 January, nearly 40,000 trade visitors attended the 42nd edition of the world’s leading horticulture trade fair in Essen, underlining its continued relevance as a business and innovation platform.
With 1,476 exhibitors, three per cent more than last year, the fair recorded growth at a time when many sectors are cautious. More than 85 per cent of exhibitors said they plan to return, a strong vote of confidence in IPM ESSEN’s commercial value. International participation remained high, with 41 per cent of visitors travelling from abroad. The Netherlands, Italy and several European markets led attendance, while 68 per cent of visitors identified themselves as decision-makers. Business activity was tangible: 22 per cent placed orders during the fair, and 63 per cent plan purchases based on contacts made in Essen.
Content at IPM ESSEN 2026 reflected the sector’s key priorities: making innovation market-ready, reducing environmental impact and reaching new customer groups. Climate-resilient plants, peat-reduced substrates, smart production technologies and circular economy approaches featured prominently across exhibition halls. The launch of round-table discussions on peat alternatives and direct engagement with policymakers highlighted sustainability as a strategic issue rather than a future ambition.
Urban greening and climate adaptation gained visibility through the new Woodland Arena, positioning horticulture as a solution provider for cities facing climate stress. At the same time, the industry’s approach to sales and communication is shifting. Social media, online retail, lifestyle-oriented plant concepts and convenience-driven solutions such as flower vending machines signal a move beyond traditional retail models.
IPM ESSEN 2026 confirmed the fair’s role as the central international meeting point for the green industry, where business is initiated, trends take shape and the long-term direction of horticulture is debated. The next edition will take place from 26 to 29 January 2027.
