The Dutch Flower Group’s (DFG) Packed at Source Africa (PASA) facility, which began operations in January this year, is making waves in the flower industry with its innovative approach. Located in Tilisi, Kenya—strategically positioned between Naivasha and Nairobi—PASA is setting new benchmarks for sustainability and efficiency in flower production.

Redefining Sustainability in Flower Production
PASA’s prime location enables it to assemble bouquets right at the source, significantly cutting down the distance flowers travel from farms to customers. This localized approach ensures that international buyers receive the freshest bouquets while drastically reducing the environmental impact of long-distance transportation. By minimizing the supply chain’s ecological footprint, PASA is pioneering sustainable practices within the industry.

Cutting-Edge Technology Meets Efficient Production
The facility boasts state-of-the-art technology, combining manual labor with conveyor belt systems for bouquet assembly. Advanced tracking systems at PASA ensure precise origin tracing of flowers, aligning with European warehousing standards. DFG’s extensive sourcing network in Kenya provides a rich variety of flowers, all certified under the FSI Basket of Standards, highlighting the company’s commitment to both quality and sustainability.

Impacting the Local Community
PASA’s influence extends beyond environmental benefits to significantly boost the local economy. The facility has generated numerous job opportunities, facilitating skill development and knowledge transfer within the Kenyan community. Moreover, it processes flower food and packaging materials like sleeves on-site, reducing the carbon footprint associated with transporting these materials and further supporting sustainability.

A Comprehensive Approach to Production
Jelle Griffioen, who oversees PASA for DFG, underscores the facility’s integrated approach: “All processes are centralized in one location, close to the source, in Kenya. This model not only fosters local employment but also enhances environmental awareness and efficiency in the production chain. We are proud of our achievements and anticipate reaching full capacity soon, aiming to produce 1 million bouquets a month in our nearly 2000m² space.”

A Model for Future Endeavors
PASA stands as a pioneering example for future projects in the flower industry. Its focus on sustainability, innovation, and community development illustrates how businesses can balance economic growth with environmental responsibility. The success of PASA highlights the potential for similar initiatives to revolutionize agricultural industries globally, promoting a more sustainable and equitable economy.

Through its strategic positioning, technological advancements, and commitment to local communities, the PASA facility by Dutch Flower Group exemplifies a forward-thinking approach to flower production, setting a new standard for sustainability in the industry.
