The Ethiopian Horticulture Producer Exporters Association (EHPEA) has launched training programs to raise awareness on avocado postharvest losses, guided by findings from a recent study titled “Assessment of Post-harvest Losses across the Avocado Value Chain in Ethiopia.”
At the latest session, 71 horticulture extension experts from South and Central Ethiopia came together to learn practical strategies for reducing postharvest losses and increasing the export potential of avocados.

Ato Admasu Aweke, Deputy Head of the South Ethiopia Regional State Bureau of Agriculture, highlighted the importance of avocados as a priority export crop for the country. He called for urgent action to address the high postharvest loss rates identified in the study, which stand between 39% and 43%.
The training also promoted cluster farming as a way to improve productivity and market access. Participants received step-by-step guidance on achieving GlobalGAP certification, enabling Ethiopian producers to meet international standards, strengthen traceability, and secure better prices.
