Tanzanian horticulturists are optimistic about fresh export possibilities as China pilots a new variety of miniature tomatoes designed for fresh eating.
This development offers Tanzanian farmers a chance to adopt the innovation, grow the crop, and access China’s enormous market of over 1.4 billion consumers.
The new tomato variety, currently in trials at the Xingqing District Agricultural Technology Promotion Centre in Yinchuan City by Beijing Rongkun Agricultural Technology Co. Ltd, boasts an exceptionally long fruiting season, producing harvestable tomatoes for up to 10 months after maturity.
The Tanzania Horticulture Association (TAHA) views this innovation as a game-changer for the country’s export sector. Recently, TAHA announced that it secured fresh produce export contracts valued at $1.6 million (around Sh4 billion) during Asia Fruit Logistica 2025, a leading international trade fair, highlighting the rising global demand for Tanzanian horticultural goods.
Jacqueline Mkindi, TAHA’s CEO, noted that numerous member companies have drawn purchase commitments from Asian buyers. She emphasized the positive trend: “International market interest keeps growing. Tanzanian fruits and vegetables are gaining ground due to their superior quality and reliable supply.”
Farmers engaged in the Chinese pilot program report encouraging progress. A project leader shared during a recent site visit, “We are about 35 percent through the project timeline and have begun to see ripe, red tomatoes. The taste is sweet, and they are already suitable for fresh consumption.”
