Africa Redefines Climate Action as Growth Opportunity, Says President Ruto

H.E. Hon. William Samoei Ruto, PhD, CGH, President of the Republic of Kenya and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence Forces

At the 2nd Africa Climate Summit held in Addis Ababa, Kenya’s President Dr. William Ruto highlighted Africa’s remarkable shift in the climate agenda, now seen not as a burden but as a powerful catalyst for growth, job creation, and transformation. He emphasized that Africa is positioning itself not as a passive victim of climate change but as a proactive global source of solutions.

Since the historic Nairobi Declaration of 2023, the continent has adopted a model of “Climate Positive Growth,” demonstrating how green industrialization, renewable energy, climate-smart agriculture, and carbon markets are driving sustainable development across Africa. President Ruto underscored that African entrepreneurs and local communities are at the forefront of this transformative journey.

To fully realize these ambitions, the President called for enhanced global partnerships. He stressed the need for reforms in international finance to reduce the cost of capital, expand concessional funding, mobilize private investments, and address debt and currency risks. In addition, he urged the opening of global markets to Africa’s green solutions, including value-added climate-smart agriculture products, green industrial goods, and carbon credits.

President Ruto launched a comprehensive report titled “Africa’s Journey of Climate Action and Partnership,” which chronicles the continent’s progress as well as the milestones achieved in climate leadership. He was clear that climate summits represent critical checkpoints on a collective path toward a climate-safe and prosperous future.

“Africa is redefining climate action, not as a constraint, but as a catalyst for opportunity,” the President said, appealing to the international community to recognize Africa’s leadership and potential in global sustainability efforts.

He cautioned against narrow self-interest and short-term transactional partnerships that undermine global cooperation. Instead, he called for solidarity and mutual accountability to address the climate crisis effectively.

The President’s message resonated as a call to action to both African nations and the global community, emphasizing that success depends on Africa delivering results at home and the global system enabling and supporting those efforts. His vision embodies a robust, green, and inclusive industrial base that will secure Africa’s rightful economic place and foster the collective strength needed for climate resilience.

Through bold leadership, partnership, and innovation, Africa aims to lead the global climate movement, turning challenges into unprecedented opportunities for present and future generations. This vision positions the continent as a beacon of sustainable development and a major contributor to solving the world’s climate challenges.
