A Glance at the Current State of the Chinese Flower Market

On the downside, succulents are witnessing a decline in demand, resulting in a notable drop.

China stands tall as one of the leading flower producers globally, exporting millions of blooms annually. The production of potted plants continues to expand, accounting for 7.65% of total flower output and a significant 30.08% of overall sales.

Among the various flower varieties, Phalaenopsis orchids have seen remarkable growth, boasting a 20% increase from the previous year. Conversely, traditional flowers like bromeliads and anthuriums have experienced price drops due to sluggish sales and waning demand. However, bulb flowers such as lilies, amaryllis, and tulips are enjoying a surge in online popularity, contributing to increased production. On the downside, succulents are witnessing a decline in demand, resulting in a notable drop in production. The Rhododendron market, however, is steadily on the rise. Ilex verticillata, available as both potted plants and cut flowers, maintains stable demand in the cut-flower sector, while interest in its potted version is growing. Production of potted Ilex verticillata has skyrocketed from 1 million to over 3 million pots, especially thriving in the primary growing regions of Shandong and Yunnan. Meanwhile, Maranta arundinacea faces tough competition from similar varieties, with around 7 million pots produced.

Tropical plants are carving out a bigger slice of the market, significantly bolstered by online platforms that promote and sell them. With prices online considerably lower than in brick-and-mortar stores, consumers are increasingly price-sensitive.

Potted plant exports have surged by 39.4% compared to last year, reaching an impressive $260 million, which constitutes 53% of all flower exports. In 2024, imports of potted plants rose modestly by 2.1%, amounting to $23.78 million.

Looking ahead, smaller potted plants are becoming increasingly favoured due to their easy shipping, affordability for online shoppers, and suitability for home gardening, whether on desks or balconies.
