The Kenya Flower Council (KFC) and MPS are proud to announce a landmark collaboration to promote sustainability in the Kenyan floriculture sector through the adoption of the HortiFootprint Calculator, developed by MPS and LetsGrow.com. This partnership marks a significant step forward in empowering Kenyan growers with cutting-edge tools to measure and reduce their environmental impact while enhancing their competitiveness in the global supply chain.
The announcement was made during IFTF in Vijfhuizen, where MPS and KFC joined forces to highlight the importance of data-driven sustainability and life cycle analysis (LCA) in floriculture. The HortiFootprint Calculator has been officially recognized by the European Commission and the Floriculture Sustainability Initiative (FSI) as a FloriPEFCR-compliant tool, making it one of the most trusted and standardized instruments for environmental impact assessment in the sector.
Designed for growers, by growers
The HortiFootprint Calculator is a user-friendly software platform that enables growers to calculate the environmental footprint of their flowers and plants across all stages of production. Covering 16 impact categories – from energy use and water usage to packaging and transport – the tool provides clear insights via an intuitive dashboard. For MPS-ABC certified growers, onboarding is seamless, as much of the required data is already available through existing record-keeping systems.
“This tool is a game-changer for growers who want to demonstrate their sustainability credentials,” said Arthij van der Veer, MPS Area Manager for Africa. “It’s not just about compliance, it’s about empowering growers and the international supply chain by making smarter, greener decisions.”
“This partnership with MPS marks a major milestone in our sustainability journey as an industry. The HortiFootprint Calculator will empower Kenyan flower growers with accurate, science-based data to benchmark, improve, and communicate their environmental performance. It’s an important step in strengthening our position as a global leader in responsible and sustainable floriculture,” says Clement Tulezi, CEO of the Kenya Flower Council.
Chris Kulei, Chair of the Kenya Flower Council Board, added: “The collaboration between KFC and MPS reflects our shared commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship. By adopting the HortiFootprint Calculator, we are not only equipping our members with the tools to remain competitive in international markets, but also reinforcing Kenya’s leadership in shaping a greener future for floriculture.”
Empowering Kenyan growers
Kenya is one of the world’s leading exporters of cut flowers, with over 60 destinations worldwide. The Kenya Flower Council plays a pivotal role in advocating for the industry, promoting innovation, and ensuring compliance with international standards through its Flowers and Ornamentals Sustainability Standard (FOSS).
By integrating the HortiFootprint Calculator into its sustainability framework, KFC is offering its members a powerful tool to meet rising global demands for transparency and environmental accountability. The partnership will also support capacity building, training and data management to ensure smooth adoption across the sector.
International recognition and future impact
The HortiFootprint Calculator’s inclusion in the FSI Basket of Standards ensures that Kenyan growers who are using the tool are aligned with international buyers, retailers, and certification standards. This opens doors to new markets and strengthens Kenya’s reputation as a sustainable flower powerhouse. As the industry moves toward full compliance with FloriPEFCR standards by 2026, the partnership between KFC and MPS sets a strong example of regional leadership and global cooperation.
