Rwandan Avocado Season Kicks Off with Remarkable Growth and Improved Logistics

Rwanda’s new avocado season has officially begun, marked by a significant increase in export volumes and enhanced logistical support. The season start aligns with a commercial window focused from September to March, a period when Rwanda faces less competition from major producers such as Peru, Kenya, and South Africa, giving it a strategic advantage as a counter-seasonal supplier.

This year, Rwanda expects a remarkable volume increase of 200 to 300 percent compared to the previous season. New orchards planted three years ago are now entering production, contributing to projections that national avocado exports will exceed 10,000 tonnes this season, setting the stage for rapid growth in Rwanda’s avocado industry, which could surpass 25,000 tonnes by 2027.

The quality of this season’s avocados is noted to be excellent, with improvements in fruit size and superior eating quality. The average fruit size has steadily improved from 20-26 to 18-22, with expectations to reach 16-20 in the near future. In addition to size, the avocados exhibit strong oil content and high dry matter, characteristics that significantly enhance their taste and market appeal.

Logistical challenges that previously hampered exports, particularly due to the Red Sea crisis, have seen marked improvement. Through collaboration with partners such as Maersk, transit times to key markets have been reduced to 37 days to Rotterdam and London, 30 days to Algeciras, and just 17 days to Dubai. Kigali’s growing status as a logistics hub, supported by dedicated refrigerated transport capacity, provides confidence in timely and efficient deliveries.

Rwanda’s focus for this season is on the European and Middle Eastern markets, where demand for high-quality and consistent avocados is strong and where premium pricing can be achieved. Rwanda’s unique selling points include its smaller, cleaner orchards, strong sustainability credentials, and its ability to supply counter-seasonally. Efforts are underway to strengthen certifications and traceability systems to meet stringent EU and UK retail standards.

Rwanda is also exploring opportunities for value-added branding to distinctly position its avocados in the global marketplace, enhancing their appeal and fostering sustainable growth in the sector. The combination of favorable growing conditions, improving export infrastructure, and strategic market focus signals a promising future for Rwanda in the competitive global avocado industry.
