Washington meeting builds on earlier engagements as Nairobi seeks post-AGOA framework

Kenya said it is ready to begin reciprocal trade negotiations with the United States after Cabinet Secretary for Investments, Trade and Industry Lee Kinyanjui met U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in Washington, D.C.
Kinyanjui said the two sides advanced plans for a trade pact to expand bilateral commerce and reaffirmed commitments to stronger investment ties. He was joined by Trade Principal Secretary Regina Ombam and Kenya’s Ambassador to the U.S. David Kerich.
The talks follow earlier meetings this year. Kinyanjui met Greer in March to discuss Kenya’s export future, while Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi held separate discussions with Greer in May.
Kenya currently trades with the U.S. under the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which provides duty-free access for thousands of products. With AGOA set to expire, Nairobi is seeking a new framework to guarantee stable market access and attract more U.S. investment.
