Kantaria Agricultural Technology and Innovation Centre (KATIC) Inaugurated

The University of Nairobi, in collaboration with Elgon Kenya, has established the Kantaria Agricultural Technology and Innovation Centre (KATIC) at the Upper Kabete Campus.

On August 14, 2025, a major milestone was achieved as the four pillars of economic growth gathered to celebrate the opening of the Kantaria Agricultural Technology and Innovation Centre (KATIC). The event, led by Her Excellency Rachel Ruto, the First Lady of the Republic of Kenya, took place at the University of Nairobi’s Upper Kabete Campus and marked a significant accomplishment.

The center represents a united effort from the Private Sector (Elgon Kenya), Academia (UON), the government, and farmers, aiming to connect the academic world with the job market. “We take immense pride in the collaborative endeavor that has led us to this moment, and we believe this center will serve as a catalyst for the positive results we envision,” she stated.

In her address, the First Lady praised KATIC as a platform that will empower youth, encourage innovation, and position agriculture as an exciting and viable career option for future generations.

KATIC is anticipated to play a crucial role in revolutionizing agricultural education in Kenya by closing the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical, technology-oriented farming. With facilities tailored for experiential learning, research, and innovation, the center will allow students to test sustainable production techniques, investigate agribusiness prospects, and provide solutions to urgent food and climate issues. Its creation signifies a wider national initiative to modernize agriculture, engage youth in the sector, and enhance Kenya’s competitiveness in both regional and global markets.

The cutting-edge facility, created in collaboration with Elgon Kenya Limited, is poised to serve as a

center for agricultural research, innovation, and skills development, providing students with contemporary farming methods to tackle food security and sustainability issues. This hub, which spans 50 acres designated by the University, will feature demonstration plots, exhibition areas, and social amenities. Additionally, the center will include conference rooms, seminar spaces, laboratories, and office facilities.

The event included a ceremonial tree planting, the unveiling of a commemorative plaque, and a guided tour of the center’s farm and exhibitions that highlighted advanced agricultural solutions.

The occasion was attended by the Managing Director of Elgon Kenya, Dr. Bimal Kantaria, and the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports, Hon. Salim Mvurya. Also present were Principal Secretaries Esther Muoria and Dr. Paul Rono, the Chairperson of the UoN Council, Prof. Chacha Nyaigoti Chacha, Elisha Washike, Chairperson of the University of Nairobi Students Association (UNSA), and Authur Mururu, Secretary General of the Kenya Agriculture Students Association (KASA), among others. Participants also had the chance to explore the demonstration farm and the exhibition booths.
